I have decided to take part in this, as not only have I watched two members of my family suffer from a heart condition, but I also have an ongoing heart problem myself. Both my grandfathers have had a heart attack, one of whom did pass away. My other grandfather, who I have lived with for almost 7 years had a heart attack in 2013. This was a terrible time for my family, as we are all very close and it came as such a shock. He is a very healthy man, who unfortunately suffered as a result of it being a hereditary condition. Thankfully, he is now fully recovered, and we are forever grateful to all the specialised doctors and surgeons who saved his life.
Three years ago, I also found out that I had a heart condition myself. This was such a shock, as I was only 16 years old and had been completely healthy up until this point. I was born with my condition, whereby my heart is essentially half functioning. There is a small hole between the top two chambers of my heart, called a Sinus Venous Atrial Septal Defect. In addition, 2 out of the 4 veins in my heart are pumping blood back into my lungs, as opposed to my blood stream. As a result, the left side of my heart is slightly too small which can put a strain on my heart. I am very lucky, as what I have can be fixed with open heart surgery. I am going to be having my operation later on this year, as I wanted to spend some time after finishing sixth form, enjoying life and experiencing a few things. Hopefully this will fix the problem, although I am always going to have to be careful about my health, to prevent me from developing an abnormal heart rhythm. This whole process has been very difficult to come to terms with, although I am now starting to feel ready to get it out the way.
I am extremely grateful that my problem is able to be fixed, so I have decided to do this to raise money in the hope that one day everyone else's conditions can be fixed too.
